Lower Red Pine Lake- Little Cottonwood Canyon

Backpacking and Outdoor Recreation Group
Yet another Sunday hike for alpine lakes enthusiasts.
We will meet at the Wasatch 3500 E Park and Ride and carpool then climb to the lake where we will rest, socialize, have a little picnic and maybe catch some trout (if you have a license- I believe it’s a catch and release situation there).
Make sure to bring plenty of water (at least 64 oz), sunscreen and definitely a bug spray.
Here is the trail description:
For about a mile, the trail is an old jeep road, a pathway shared with the hike up the White Pine Trail. Crossing White Pine Fork Creek on a footbridge, Red Pine Trail traverses a ridge and enters Red Pine Canyon where it starts to climb. There are splendid views of the canyon you’re ascending. At about 2.5 miles in, the trail to Maybird Gulch leaves to the west, crossing the creek on another footbridge. From here the last mile passes swiftly, and soon you’re looking down at Lower Red Pine Lake, nestled in a forest just below treeline. The trail circles the lake. It is possible to scramble across the ridge to White pine Lake and make a loop on the way down, but I have never done it before, so we wil lstick to the known.
Distance: 7 miles round trip
Elevation gain : about 2,000 feet
Approx. walking time: 5 hrs round trip at a more leisurely pace
Difficulty level: Intermediate
last 0.5 mile is fairly steep.
Again, no dogs are allowed in Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon.
