Ancient History
This will be a combination trip to Indian Ruins in the Cedar Mesa area and a semi-technical canyon known as the Black Hole. The first set of ruins we will do is called “The Citadel” which was a fortress style Indian dwelling built on a peninsula that rises over 300 feet from the ground below. I have not completely decided the second set of ruins we may visit. On Sunday we will visit “The Black Hole”, this canyon will require some advanced hiking skills and a little bit of courage. A good portion of the time you will be in water. A lot of water is avoidable even though tackling it head on is part of the adventure. If you are very sensitive to cold, you may want a wetsuit. I will only be taking one because I will spend more time in the water helping people with downclimbs. Unless you really dislike cold and you keep moving then it won’t be needed.
Here is a link to the Black Hole and the Citadel so you can get an idea of what we will be doing.

Even though it will require a little extra driving to get to the Indian ruins, I have decided that we will camp at Hite Marina. Even though camping at Hite Marina will increase the amount of driving we have to do on Saturday to get to the Indian Ruins, it was a safe call. I learned from every trip I have ever done to the Cedar Mesa area that no matter where we camp we will end up at Lake Powell eventually. I just thought we would camp at Lake Powell this time. There will be a fee to camp at Lake Powell so if everyone car pools it won’t be too bad. There are also toilets and a convenience store close by. If you have any floaties and want to chill on the lake this is always an option.
To get there take I-15 South to the first Spanish Fork exit which will be Highway number 6. Take Highway 6 towards Price/Green River. Stay on Highway 6 until you get to I-70. Take I-70 east to Green River and fill up with gas and snacks while they are still reasonable prices. Leave Green River heading west on I-70. Exit I-70 at the Hanksville exit approx. 12 miles outside of Green River. Take Highway 24 South until the Highway “T”s in Hanksville. Turn left and head toward Lake Powell. After about 50 miles you will see a sign on your right that says Hite Marina. Turn right here. After a mile you will come to a ranger station on your right. There should be a self pay station at the kiosk here. After picking up your permit head toward the lake and look for the yellow jeep.
To get into Hite Marina it is $16 for a 7 day pass. It will also be $12 to camp the night. I recommend carpooling to make it cheaper. There will also be a $2 charge per person for access to the Citadel. If you have a high clearance of 4-wheel drive vehicle it would be best if you brought that. The road to the Citadel trailhead wasn’t pretty when we were there last.
